# Configure Trading Order Settings

**TRADING DASHBOARD & APM · 6 OF 8 · ORDER CONFIGURATION**

**Set defaults once. Override only where you need a difference.**

Trading settings flow from Global settings to the account, then to the strategy. Check the heading to know which level you are editing.

## Understand the three levels

| Level | Where to open it | Scope |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Global** | Settings in the lower-left navigation. | The defaults inherited by accounts unless an account overrides them. |
| **Account** | The sliders at the upper-right edge of the Account panel. | Settings for the selected account. Its dialog says the defaults come from Global settings. |
| **Strategy** | The sliders in that strategy row’s Manage column. | Settings for the named strategy. Its dialog says the defaults come from the selected account. |

Read the heading and inheritance sentence first. This dialog applies to the named strategy. **Click to enlarge.**

**Changes apply immediately**

Both demonstrated trading-settings dialogs explicitly say that changes are applied immediately. The bottom button is Close, not Save. Treat changing a value as an active settings change; closing the window is not a way to undo it.

## Use the override controls deliberately

- **Pencil beside a value:** create an editable override at the current level.
- **Override All:** use the dialog’s control when you intend to override its settings together.
- **Reset control beside an overridden value:** return that setting to inheritance.
- **Reset All:** return the dialog’s overrides to inherited settings. This is not the strategy-reset action in the dashboard’s Manage column.

The account dialog also shows **Merge orders across strategies**. Dan’s example displays Yes. That setting concerns order handling across strategies in the account; he does not demonstrate changing it or explain its full behavior, so keep your intended account configuration and consult its information tooltip before changing it.

## Read Dan’s Relative Order example correctly

The entry section includes **Convert market orders to**. Dan’s configuration converts these to **Relative Order (REL)**. This field describes the treatment of market orders; do not assume it replaces every existing limit-order instruction from a strategy.

| Setting visible in the recording | Example value |
| --- | --- |
| Convert market orders to | Relative Order (REL) |
| REL limit calculation method | Average True Range |
| ATR multiplier | 2.5 |
| ATR period (days) | 21 |
| Auxiliary price offset | 0.01 |
| Use Accumulate/Distribute algo | No |

These values document the walkthrough; they are not a universal recommended configuration. Dan describes using a one-cent offset to quote a buy near the bid and a sell near the ask, letting the order work instead of immediately crossing the spread with a market order.

IBKR explains that a Relative order derives its price from a market quote plus a configured offset and adjusts according to its pricing logic. The behavior depends on routing: Smart-routed orders can ratchet in the favorable competitive direction rather than following every move both ways. Price limits and fill availability still matter. See IBKR’s [Relative Order definition](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/campus/glossary-terms/relative-order/) and [Relative/Pegged-to-Primary order reference](https://us1.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/ordertypes.php?m=peggedStockModal).

**Patient execution can mean an unfilled order**

An execution setting can express your price preference; it cannot ensure a fill or a better result. The walkthrough’s Orders panel contains cancellations because a limit price was not reached. Inspect the reason and filled quantity before treating a cancellation as a fault.

## Configure exits and specialized order choices

The right side contains **Exit Order Settings**. With **Use entry order settings** set to Yes, the exits use the entry configuration. If you need different exit behavior, use the controls provided for that choice and verify the resulting settings at the correct level.

Dan also discusses opening-auction orders and IBKR’s Accumulate/Distribute algorithm for working larger positions in pieces. Those are advanced execution choices; this recording does not walk through their complete setup. The example leaves Accumulate/Distribute disabled. Paper-account support and simulated fills can differ from live execution, so confirm the chosen order type’s current broker support before relying on a paper test as proof of live behavior.

After any intended change, return to the dashboard and review the affected orders and fills. Use [Review Orders and Reconcile Broker Positions](https://portfolioboss.com/documentation/review-orders-and-reconcile-broker-positions/) to follow execution and reconcile holdings.
